Impedance Bonds

Impedance Bonds designed and manufactured by PE are used in electrified transit applications with insulating track joints to equalize propulsion current in the rails at low resistance and provide a continuous traction current path while blocking control signal currents between adjacent track circuits. These units are available in a wide range of configurations and sizes, and are designed for either AC or DC propulsion systems.

PE Impedance Bonds function by providing a low impedance connection which equalizes propulsion current between rails. Features include:

  • Control AC signaling current flow from one rail to the other
  • Connect cab signal pulses to the rail
  • Cross-bond between the tracks
  • Transmit selected-frequencies only

PE Impedance Bonds are designed with the transit environment in mind. Heavy duty steel housings surround a coil assembly that is - epoxy or varnish - impregnated for efficient heat transfer. Units are low profile, designed for installation above tie level and between rails. A removable cover is configured to deflect anything hanging from the car’s under-carriage. Features:

  • Rugged, compact, and lightweight
  • Heavy duty construction for the transit environment
  • Available in AC and DC propulsion configurations
  • 300 Amp/Rail AC to 3000 Amp/Rail DC models
  • Fixed impedance or custom-tunable designs
  • PEI models cross-reference to competitive designs
  • Designed to AAR standards

Audio Bonds

PE's high current unbalance impedance bonds are small and light weight, permit reliable signaling across insulated joints in light rail transit systems and functionally interchangeable in existing systems to provide improved immunity to DC unbalance. This self-contained unit offers high impedance between rails at selected (signaling) frequencies, low at intermediate frequencies utilizing the newest electrical and magnetic materials. Usable over track length with standard ballast to 0.2 miles.

Designed to operate with large unbalanced traction current. Intended application where traction power is via a single rail and meet the requirements of AREMA Communication and Signal Manual Part 8.4.5. Features:

  • Functional with unbalance currents up to 100% per rail for ten (10) minutes at 100 degree F temperature rise.
  • Continuous current 2000 amp per rail and capable of sustaining a surge of 6000 amp per rail for one minute.
  • Operates at standard train detection audio frequencies: 2000 to 5000 Hz.
  • Cab Frequency: 2340 Hz
  • One Transmit Frequency
  • One Receive Frequency
  • Custom tuned to other Cab, Transmit or Receive Frequencies.
  • Rail to Rail impedance at tuned frequencies: 0.5 ohms.
  • All components in single enclosure.
  • Environmentally sealed.
  • DC Resistance: 50u ohms.
  • Insulation tested to 3000 VAC.
  • FMECA fail safe against most frequent component failures.
  • Physical size: 6” H x 14” W x 6” D excluding mounting bolts.
  • Humidity and moisture sealed, waterproof.
  • Light weight less than 90 LBS.
